As the New Year has come and gone, it’s time to decide if buying a new laptop is something you should do. Pricing is continuing to get lower and lower as consumers have curbed spending over the last year. With that comes an overstock of new electronics with prices that are dropping daily.
Are you trying to decide if you should take advantage of the low pricing and purchase a new laptop? Then the second big question is new or refurbished. Another thing you should think about is used.
Depreciation is something to consider when you buy new. Paying $1000 to $1500 for a new laptop might not be such a good idea when there are many “used” laptops that will suffice depending on your needs. Make the decision to do some investigating to see what’s available out there before committing to a new laptop.
There are a couple of ways to go when searching for a used or refurbished laptop. There is Ebay of course, which is where you can find not only used but also new laptops for a significant savings. Also, Dell, Sony and Panasonic have a refurbished/off lease section on their home page or do a Google search.
During my research, I found just a shell of a laptop on Dell. It’s basically wiped clean of all software including the operating system. If you already have your operating systems from your old computer, then pay a little over $100 and purchase one of these models. That frees up more money for upgrades like memory and other software you might need.
Buying an off lease from the manufacturer can save you a considerable amount of money. Again, these computers have been completely refurbished as are just like new. You can basically pick and choose your options and the money you save could give you a better computer for the price than buying new.
The best thing to do is to put it all on paper. Make yourself a list of what you want on your new laptop, price it all out and then do the same for your refurbished. I bet that you will see that you might save enough money to make this a logical solution. I even purchased an extended 3-year warranty on my refurbished and still saved over $250.
Now I bet that a lot of you are sitting there going, “how do I install my own memory?” Well, it’s totally simple in a laptop so don’t let that discourage you from going used or refurbished. Ebay also has great prices on operating systems if you need to upgrade that as well. All simple and easy and you have yourself a ‘like new’ computer.
Lastly a great option that many people don’t think about it an external hard drive. If you computer seems to be running slow and freezes, you could transfer documents and pictures to your external drive. This way you can free up space on your hard drive then upgrade to more memory and presto, problems solved.
