As an avid Internet user, I have become increasingly concerned about my personal information that is stored without my knowledge on my computer. I know that hackers can get into just about anything, and I didn’t want to become a victim. What’s in the dark places on my laptop?

I do a lot of searching on the Internet and visit a lot of sites where you can make purchases. I signed into buy.com one day and got the prompt, “welcome back John” and was startled. ‘How in the world do they have that information and what else do they have on me?’ which caused me concern. So I did a little research.

As we hear more and more about people’s identity being stolen, this became a big concern for me. I’ve worked many years at maintaining my good credit standing and I did not want some low life stealing my personal information. Not if I could help it.

There are people all over the country who have experienced this problem. I have a friend who received a statement in the mail one day from a computer store. She just thought it was a solicitation for a credit card and was about to toss it. Then she realized that it was a statement showing a balance left on the card AFTER her purchase for a computer.

Well, guess you know where this is headed; she didn’t purchase a computer from that particular store. Someone had opened a credit account for this store online with her personal information and purchased a computer. Almost $1000 worth of credit was charged and while the computer was delivered somewhere else, she received the statement.

As you can imagine, she immediately called the credit card company and canceled the card and started the dispute process. It took her six months to clear the matter, she had to cancel all her credit cards and to this day, she checks her credit four times a year or more to make sure she is still safe.

I have learned that there are just a few easy precautions that you can take to minimize the threat when from going online. Deleting all your cache files, temporary Internet files and history is the first basic step you can do yourself. By going to your start menu, click control panel, then find the Internet options icon, click that and on the general page you will see where you can delete the above files.

One more file still lurks down in the belly of your computer. It’s called a Index.dat file, however, you can not remove it. I’m not really sure why but Microsoft does not allow manual removal of this file so it will sit there until the day your hard drive is wiped clean.

Staying on top of deleting your computer’s stored information can be the first step in protecting your personal information. There is a program I have heard of called PC Confidential you might want to look into as well. Just remember, we never think we are going to fall prey to criminals, but do you want to risk it when you might be able to prevent it?

This is a constant question that I know is asked by anyone who owns or uses a laptop computer. Surprisingly, with some very simple steps, you can extend the life of your laptop battery. Manufacturers are working to design a longer life battery but until that happens, try this.

Try not to let you laptop get hot. This is a main cause of battery failure. The fan inside your laptop is designed to keep the inside of the laptop cool. Do not sit your laptop on a soft surface like a pillow or a blanket, better to have a cooling pad for your lap.

Keep your workstation free of dust and debris. These things can be sucked into the bottom of the laptop through the fan and can cause more problems. A fan that is cluttered with dust causes it to run harder and generates more heat, which in turn depletes the battery. You can use the air can to free your laptop of dust but be careful, you can harm other components as well.

How about this one; and |I should have put two and two together…but didn’t. I know that I can’t leave my cell phone or camera in the car because the heat inside will deplete the batteries. Why have I not thought of that where my laptop is concerned?

There are times during the day that I don’t need to have my laptop when I visit a client. Those are the times when I just leave my computer bag in the car. Now I realize that I have been the culprit by neglect and created my own problems by letting the laptop get to hot.

Something I had not heard was to take out your battery when you are plugged into a wall outlet. If you are working on AC power, then it’s not necessary to have your battery in the laptop. Overcharging can also present problems for your laptop battery.

Another problem I know is that the cords on the laptop battery packs get damaged causing the user to have to purchase a replacement cord. Make you purchase the correct wattage cord because using a higher wattage than what the laptop calls for can damage the battery and possibly the motherboard.

Don’t worry about working on your laptop without the battery because it won’t hurt the computer. Just be sure when you replace the battery that the contacts are clean and dust free. You can take a cloth and put a little rubbing alcohol on it and when it’s dry, insert the battery back free of debris.

It’s important to know the charging requirements for your laptop battery. Some batteries will require that you let the charge run all the way down before recharging or you can create a memory in the battery, which can result in a minimal charge. Be sure you are charging your battery appropriately, to ensure the maximum battery life possible!

Being a seasoned traveler as I am, I had one final requirement for my computer bag. It had to have space for a quick change of clothes. It only takes one time arriving to your final destination and finding your suitcase didn’t to make this important to you as well so heed my warning!

Your carryon computer bag should be able to hold your valuables as well. I have had my checked luggage searched more times than not and believe me, that’s not the place for your valuable possessions. My computer bag is with me at all times and that’s where you valuable should be as well.

When you travel, as much as I do, you want o make sure you are not caught without the necessities. A hard-sided laptop case adds extra protection to my laptop, but also provides a little extra space for everything I need. I arrive fully prepared to start my business trip off on the right foot.

With the increased security screens facing us in airports all over the world, there is no way around the inconvenience. We are lucky to get on the plane with any bag in tow. I’m just waiting for the day when we are searched down to our skivvies and hope we are not asked to check those as well.

Netbooks or Notebooks seem to be the big question today. As technology continues to evolve, we are seeing the laptops get smaller and now have the introduction of the Notebook. What exactly is the difference between the two?

After doing a little research, this is what came up with for reasons that most people made the decision to go Netbook or Notebook. I know just by sight that the Netbooks are smaller than the Notebooks. That is the most obvious difference; but what other features are making these compact computers so appealing?

Today’s Notebooks are running on Window’s Vista. The Netbooks however come with Window’s XP. While some of the newer Netbooks are coming with Window 7 installed, I know a few people who are using Windows Vista and they are not too terribly happy with it.

I found that the fist thing that grabbed the attention for the Netbooks was their compact size. Carrying around a heavy notebook gets cumbersome if you are mobile throughout your busy day. If you can access your documents and the web while mobile and do not mind the smaller hard drive space; what’s not to like about the Netbook?

Another difference is the size of the screen and keyboard of the Netbooks. They are considerably smaller then the standard notebook with an LCD screen between 5.5″ to 11″. While there are some Netbooks that are getting closer in screen and keyboard size to their larger counterparts, there is still a difference.

Many of the Netbooks are internally equipped with cameras and microphones allowing for the use of Skype without any external equipment. However, they do not come with a DVD/CD drive. That would be an issue if you wanted to install new software.

You can purchase a portable DVD/CD device or external hard drives to upload or store data. This is something to consider when pricing your Netbook. While you save money on the Netbook, the extra cost of an external drive will be incurred.

If you depend on your laptop to be productive in the field, then a Netbook should probably not be your choice. Hauling a portable device like a CD/DVD drive everywhere does not make much sense. We have cell phones; laptops and whatever else needed for our busy workday, why drag unnecessary items around if you don’t need to?

Laptops come in all shapes and sizes and the market pricing varies considerably. Making a decision about which one will work for you is a personal choice. For the past quarter of a century or more we have been relying on computers to get us through our day. As the New Year has come and gone, it’s time to decide if buying a new laptop is something you should do. Pricing is continuing to get lower and lower as consumers have curbed spending over the last year. With that comes an overstock of new electronics with prices that are dropping daily.

Buying an off lease from the manufacturer can save you a considerable amount of money. Again, these computers have been completely refurbished as are just like new. You can basically pick and choose your options and the money you save could give you a better computer for the price than buying new.

The best thing to do is to put it all on paper. Make yourself a list of what you want on your new laptop, price it all out and then do the same for your refurbished. I bet that you will see that you might save enough money to make this a logical solution. I even purchased an extended 3-year warranty on my refurbished and still saved over $250.

Now I bet that a lot of you are sitting there going, “how do I install my own memory?” Well, it’s totally simple in a laptop so don’t let that discourage you from going used or refurbished. Ebay also has great prices on operating systems if you need to upgrade that as well. All simple and easy and you have yourself a ‘like new’ computer.

Lastly a great option that many people don’t think about it an external hard drive. If you computer seems to be running slow and freezes, you could transfer documents and pictures to your external drive. This way you can free up space on your hard drive then upgrade to more memory and presto, problems solved.

Computers are evolving into multifunctional machines as technology advances with the times. Laptop manufacturers do not want to be left behind where their products are concerned. They are continuing to accommodate the longer workdays of their customers and we are going to tell you how.

Sounds a little complicated but if it works, that’s all that matters right?

While micro fuel cells are more expensive than the “free” solar power, they have their advantages. Your laptop is up and running both at night and while you are indoors. So there is little snag again where our batteries are concerned but it sound like they are working on it and that’s a plus.

As a field representative, I have experienced battery failure more times then I can say. This usually occurs at a critical time of my day which leaves me scampering around for an outlet. I will be elated knowing that there is a solution right around the corner.

Green is always the better way to go where our planet is concerned. However, if the green option doesn’t work all day then you have to make the best decision for your needs. Try them out, see which you prefer for your needs and decide after that.

Whatever way the manufacturers decide to go will be better than it is at the present time. Batteries are a sore subject with most laptop users and to have new technology will be a bonus regardless. Cost will be a factor and it’s something we will deal with but at least we are heading towards a positive solution.
